Curriculum and Instruction
Manteo Middle School provides students with their basic core classes of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies as well as two Exploratory Classes each day. MMS enriches the long days of learning with Tomahawk Time (between 11:50 and 1:20) during which students select between a variety of offered activities as well as work with teachers to receive targeted instructional support.
Sixth Grade
Sixth grade is an exciting time of transitions for students and parents. At Manteo Middle School, our sixth grade team of teachers works to assist the students and their families in making a smooth transition from elementary school to middle school. We aim to keep all learners actively engaged while promoting positive communication and parental involvement in striving to help all students gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to achieve their middle school goals.
Seventh Grade
Seventh grade is a year of tremendous growth for adolescents. Manteo Middle School students find it to be a year of many rewards, challenges, and changes as they develop academically, socially, and personally. They are becoming more independent and learning to balance this new freedom in a safe academic setting. Our students explore and expand academic, career, team building, and social skills, forging life long habits as they progress towards mastery. The seventh grade teachers hold high expectations for our students and guide them to expect the same of themselves. Our team is always willing to collaborate with students, families, resource staff, and athletic coaches to assist the students in setting, meeting, and exceeding their goals. The students’ development over this middle year of middle school allows them to create choice in their future endeavors in eighth grade and beyond.
Eighth Grade
Eighth grade at Manteo Middle School is a transition year, bridging middle school and high school. Coursework continues to address the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Standard Course of Study for Middle Schools, but eligible 8th grade students are also able to increase their academic rigor by enrolling in one or more high school level classes for credit. Many eighth grade students participate in athletics, clubs, and other extracurricular activities. The National Junior Honor Society is an 8th grade organization whose members annually provide hundreds of hours of service to the community. Eighth grade teachers and their students work together to make the final year of middle school a memorable one!
