Exploratory Offerings

Each semester students have two Exploratory Classes.  One of those Exploratory Classes is Physical Education and Health.  The student's second choice may be that of Art, AVID, Band, Chorus or a Career and Technical Class such as Coding, Keyboarding, and STEM.

Art

In our middle school art classes, students dive into the world of creativity and self-expression while building essential artistic skills. Throughout the year, they explore a wide range of mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital art. Students learn the principles of design, such as balance, contrast, and harmony, and how to apply these concepts to their own artwork. They also study the works of famous artists and various art movements, gaining an understanding of art history and cultural influences. By the end of middle school, students are not only more confident in their artistic abilities but also more aware of the power of art to communicate ideas and emotions.|

AVID

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a comprehensive program designed to prepare middle school students for academic success and future college readiness. Focused on students who are capable of excelling with the right support, AVID provides targeted instruction in essential skills such as organization, critical thinking, and effective study habits. In middle school, AVID students participate in a structured elective class where they receive additional guidance on note-taking, time management, and goal setting. The program also emphasizes the importance of college and career exploration, encouraging students to aspire to higher education and meaningful careers. Through collaborative activities, tutorials, and peer support, AVID helps students develop the confidence and determination they need to achieve their academic goals and thrive in high school and beyond.

Band

In our middle school band program, students embark on an exciting journey of musical discovery and skill development. Whether they are new to playing an instrument or building on prior experience, students learn the fundamentals of music, including reading sheet music, rhythm, and pitch. They also develop essential techniques for their chosen instrument, such as breath control, finger placement, and tone production. As part of the band, students experience the importance of teamwork and collaboration, working together to create harmonious performances. Through regular practice, rehearsals, and performances, students gain confidence in their abilities and learn the discipline and perseverance required to excel in music. Along the way, they also explore a wide range of musical genres, from classical to contemporary, broadening their appreciation for the art of music. By the end of middle school, students are not only proficient in their instruments but also have a deeper understanding of music and the joy of creating it as part of an ensemble.

CTE (Career and Technical Education)

Middle school Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses provide students with hands-on learning experiences that introduce them to a variety of career pathways and essential life skills. Through project-based learning, students develop practical skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication. They also learn to use various tools, software, and techniques relevant to the industries they study, giving them a head start in understanding real-world applications. By the end of middle school, students have a clearer sense of their interests and strengths, as well as the confidence to pursue further education and training in the fields that inspire them.

Physical Education 

Middle school physical education (PE) courses are designed to help students develop a strong foundation in physical fitness, sportsmanship, and healthy lifestyle habits. Throughout the year, students engage in a variety of physical activities, including team sports, individual exercises, and fitness challenges, all aimed at improving their strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination.
